North Windy Ridge Intermediate (NWRI) has a new sports club - Golf! Assistant Principal Bill Honey started it this past year after students showed interest as it already has eight dedicated members ready to get out to the green and tee off. While Mr. Honey has created a small course on campus for students to use, getting out to a real golf course is important to learning the game, he said. The way that the green on a course is cut can change a lot, and getting to use a driving range allows students to see the full power of their swings. Getting out to the Reems Creek golf course for the first time helped students hone their skills on a well-kept green, where they got to enjoy both the driving range and the putting green.
“Golf is a great sport to offer,” said Mr. Honey. “It’s all about the mechanics - you have to learn how to follow directions. You have to slow things down, think about what you’re doing, and listen to feedback. Just like in school, your golf swing has to have follow-through, too.”
Students were excited for their first club outing to a course, getting careful guidance from Mr. Honey on their form and watching their balls fly towards the flags on the driving range. When it came to the putting green, students learned to slow down and take their time with each putt. In every situation, they cheered each other on (quietly, as one does in golf) and encouraged each other.
“When they get to the green, whether it's here or at school, they’ve got camaraderie and are building friendships,” said Mr. Honey. “It’s just everything. I feel grateful we’re able to offer this to our students.”
