Students at Charles D. Owen High School proved that compassion and community go hand-in-hand. Through their Serve to Lead club, students partnered with Serve to Lead Asheville and the Valley Hope Foundation to host a walk-a-thon in June that raised more than $35,000 to support rebuilding efforts in Swannanoa’s Beacon Village in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene.
The devastating storm left a lasting impact on the Swannanoa community - an impact that inspired students to act. Determined to make a difference in their own backyard, they organized and promoted the event, gathered sponsors, and laced up their shoes for a cause greater than themselves.
“For me, it’s a powerful reminder that service begins close to home,” said Serve to Lead Club sponsor Anne Haffey. “Rebuilding Beacon Village isn’t just about homes; it’s about restoring hope and stability for ourselves and neighbors. Raising this money showed me how passionate, capable, and empathetic students are when given the opportunity to lead with purpose. They didn’t just raise money—they raised hope.”
The walk-a-thon brought together families, local leaders, and community members in a powerful show of unity. Every dollar raised will stay in Swannanoa, directly supporting recovery and rebuilding projects through Valley Hope Foundation’s local initiatives.
More than just a fundraiser, the event reflected the heart of what it means to serve and to lead - something Owen students take seriously as they grow into the next generation of changemakers.
