As the weather turns cold this new year, a group of children at Leicester Elementary are focused on those around them who may be in need. These students were inspired to collect items for the homeless population in the Asheville area. Ms. Michelle Berry’s fourth grade class created “Berry’s Blessing Bags”.

“They truly worry about their neighbors as much as they do themselves,” explained Leicester Elementary Principal Chad Upton. “It’s tough to teach, but it is something that we can expand on to make our community as strong as we can.”

Prior to winter break, the students brought in all kinds of hygiene products such as soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste, deodorant, and shampoo. Mr. Upton says he’s really impressed with what they were able to accomplish.

“For them to come up with this idea themselves, then work to try to find a way to make it work really shows us that they have that capacity to consider other people, along with being able to make and strengthen relationships in the process,” he said.

He adds that the relationships the students made on this project brought much joy to their school community.

“Those relationships are really the foundation of everything that we want to do at our school,” said Mr. Upton. “So you can imagine how proud we are of them.”

Seeing the “Berry’s Blessing Bags” come to life embodies what the school believes in-- thinking of others.

“Everyone here believes that what they do here and for each other truly matters,” Mr. Upton went on to say. “But it really is a foundational level of who our kids already are, and that's special.”
