head startAll children deserve the best possible start in life, but this goal can be hard for many families to reach alone. That’s why Community Action Opportunities has Head Start to help parents with their child’s physical, educational, social, and emotional growth.

Head Start is for families on limited incomes who have children ages three to five years old. We welcome people from all racial, religious, and cultural groups, including those who speak little or no English, or have children with disabilities.

A Child's Head Start Experience
Every child learns differently, yet all children learn through play. Our experienced and qualified teachers create stimulating settings and design fun activities that help children learn as they explore and begin to understand the world. In a safe classroom, surrounded by love, acceptance and understanding, children become more confident and form good habits while they socialize and solve problems. They begin to value their own ideas, express opinions and improve their language and early literacy skills.

Teachers plan, assess and record each child’s progress and share that information with parents. Head Start children leave the program better prepared for kindergarten, excited about learning and ready to succeed in life.

familyParents and Head Start: A Powerful Team
We believe that parents are their child’s first and most important teachers, so we offer classes that parents can use to help their children learn and grow. Parents may choose from many subjects, such as parenting, early childhood development, nutrition, and health. Many parents also want to strengthen their employment skills and improve their life. We support these families and help them to identify and use community resources that meet their needs.

Parents have a strong voice in Head Start. They can volunteer in their child’s classroom and serve on advisory and policy-making committees. Through these and other avenues, parents contribute their ideas and experiences and help improve the quality of our Head Start Program.
Healthy Children are Ready to Learn
We are dedicated to the well-being of children and to strengthening parents’ abilities to keep their children healthy and ready to learn. We make sure that all Head Start children receive physicals and immunizations. We also assess their:
  • Dental and vision health,
  • Nutritional needs,
  • Hearing and speech, and
  • Developmental progress
If children need additional treatment, we work with families and healthcare providers to schedule appointments and arrange transportation. We also help parents build an ongoing relationship with their child’s doctor.

Early detection of a disability improves a child’s ability to cope with and overcome future challenges. In Head Start, we work with specialists to develop and provide services that help children with disabilities to reach their full potential.

How to Apply
Community Action Opportunities Head Start school year begins in August. However, Head Start will accept applications throughout the year and enroll children as soon as we have classroom space. We can help parents complete the application process.
